Trigonometric identity gives
cos3(wt)=(3/4)cos(wt)+(1/4)cos(3wt)
The output is thus given by
y=[a1+(3/4)a3]Vcos(wt)-(1/4)a3V3cos(3wt)
Thus a small cubic nonlinearity gives rise to a modified response at w but also generates a new signal at 3w
