Imperial College

Imperial College has been involved in the use of laser produced plasmas for electron acceleration applications since the mid 1980's. This work has involved exploration of the beatwave acceleration scheme, the self-modulated wakefield scheme and "resonant" wakefield acceleration. We have made the first measurements of plasma wave "wave-breaking" (Modena et al., Nature 1995) and of the "forced" laser wakefield regime (Malka et al., Science 2002).
The Imperial College group is contributing to the ALPHA-X project by examining schemes for all-optical injection of electrons into a wakefield using the upgraded ASTRA laser system at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (STFC). This will potentially allow a significant reduction in the energy spread of the accelerated electrons.

Bucker

Mr Bucker Dangor

e-mail: b.dangor-at-ic.ac.uk

Bucker is an Emeritus Reader and Senior Research Investigator at Imperial College and performed the first laser particle acceleration experiments using the beatwave scheme at RAL. He has also been involved in high intensity laser plasma interaction experiments since the first use of the technique of Chirped Pulse Amplification at RAL.

Stuart

Stuart is a post-doctoral researcher at Imperial College. He recently received and Advanced Fellowship from the Royal Society.

Karl

Prof. Karl Krushelnick

e-mail: kmkr-at-umich.edu

Karl resigned as Head of the Plasma Physics Group in the Physics Department at Imperial College in late 2006. This was in order to become a Professor of Nuclear Engineering and Radiological Sciences and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) Department, University of Michigan College of Engineering. He remains a Visiting Professor at Imperial.
