Stefan Kuhr
Professor of Quantum Information

Stefan Kuhr received his PhD in 2003 in Bonn before he became a postdoctoral fellow at the Ecole Normale Supérieure in Paris from 2003 - 2006. Since 2007 he has been working as a senior scientist at the University of Mainz and the Max-Planck-Institute for Quantum Optics in Garching. He joined the Physics Department of the University of Strathclyde in 2011 and holds the SUPA Chair of Quantum Information. His current research work focuses on single-atom resolved manipulation and detection of ultracold atoms in optical lattices.

Research
Stefan works in the field of quantum optics, in particular with ultracold atoms in optical lattices. With his research group at the MPQ in Garching, he succeeded in imaging and addressing individual atoms in a strongly correlated quantum system (Nature 467, 68 (2010), Nature 471, 319 (2011), Science 334, 200 (2011), Nature 481, 484 (2012)). In Strathclyde, he will use these techniques for quantum simulation of strongly correlated many-body systems and for scalable quantum information processing.

His past work also focused on experiments with single quantum objects. He pioneered single-atom trapping in optical lattices in his PhD thesis (Science 293, 278 (2001)) and demonstrated quantum non-demolition detection of single photons during his stay at the ENS in Paris (Nature 446, 297 (2007), Nature 448, 889 (2007)).
