<p class="MsoNormal"><u>Ernest Rutherford Fellowship Application
Limits<o:p></o:p></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">STFC sets a limit on the number of
Fellowship applications that each department is permitted to
submit and these limits are agreed annually by the Education,
Training and Careers Committee. For the current round the
Committee has recommended that the overall maximum number of
applications should remain at the current level to ensure that
only genuinely competitive candidates are put forward and that
the peer review process can focus on careful assessment of
those candidates. The Committee also recommended that no
appeals should be allowed.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><u>Your Department’s Limit<o:p></o:p></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>University of Strathclyde<o:p></o:p></b></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b>The maximum number of Ernest Rutherford
Fellowship applications that may be submitted by your
department is 1.<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b><o:p> </o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">This limit is derived from the number of
staff within the department as input in 2011 to the STFC
research studentship algorithm. In keeping with the
recommendation of the Education, Training and Careers
Committee, no appeals for applications above the limit
calculated by this method will be allowed. To avoid
disadvantaging candidates who might otherwise have applied
through another department, you should remain within these
limits. You may also wish to consider the timing of internal
selection processes in case of excellent late-emerging
candidates.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Any departments who exceed their limit will
be required to withdraw the excess application(s).
Departments will be notified by STFC if they exceed their
limit and will need to select the application(s) to withdraw
within one week of this notification. If no selection is made
by the department, the excess application(s) will be selected
by STFC based on the chronological order in which they were
received.</p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><u>Returners to Research<o:p></o:p></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">STFC encourages returners to research and
the limit will not apply to any applications from candidates
who are intending to return to research from a career break
(normally of at least two years). Ernest Rutherford
Fellowship applications from returners may be submitted in
excess of the departmental limit given above. Returner
applications will be judged solely on the applicant’s track
record prior to their career break. The Fellowships Panel
will look to the track record for evidence of the qualities of
excellence and potential expected of a fellowship holder.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><u>Call for Proposals<o:p></o:p></u></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The closing date for the 2011/12
fellowships round will be Thursday 27 September 2012 and the
application form is now available via the Je-S system.</p>
