Dear All,<br>
<br>
Do you need any items of small equipment to support the activities of
ECRs?<br>
<br>
If so, please write something that addresses all of the points below
and send to me. <br>
I will coordinate the Departmental response. <br>
<br>
I should also say that I am away at a conference from Monday to
Thursday of next week, and the deadline is Friday 7th, so it would be
best to catch me this week if you want to discuss.<br>
<br>
Regards<br>
John<br>

<div>Dear Head of Department,</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Prof Littlejohn has asked me to draw this EPSRC call to your
attention</div>
<div><a moz-do-not-send="true"
href="http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/calls/open/Pages/upgradingsmallequipbase.aspx">http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/funding/calls/open/Pages/upgradingsmallequipbase.aspx</a></div>
<div> </div>
<div>He would be grateful for any inputs you’d like to make to the
drafting of a single, University-level response. This will need to
comprise an outline plan for how we may best use any such money for
small items of equipment in support of the research activities of early
career researchers (PhD to new lecturer). Individual items should cost
less than £10k, but each institutional bid will total in the region of
£500k.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>May I therefore ask that you complete the following outline of any
equipment which you wish to be requested:</div>
<div> </div>
<div>• Areas of research that would be supported by the
purchase of each item of equipment</div>
<div>• How they relate to EPSRC priority areas and national
need (See Note 1, below)</div>
<div>• Which individuals would be supported -early career
researchers ie (EPSRC-funded) PhD to new lecturer</div>
<div>• Which items would be obtained (plus some idea of the
costs, including VAT). (Note 2)</div>
<div>• How these items would elevate the quality/quantity
of the research outputs (Note 3)</div>
<div> </div>
<div>The submission deadline is 3rd October, so I’d be very grateful
for your contributions/suggestions in this format by 7th September
please.</div>
<div>Yours faithfully,,</div>
<div>Patrick Andrews</div>

<div>Notes</div>
<div>(1) EPSRC delivery plan priorities are</div>
<div>• Delivering Impact</div>
<div>• Shaping Capability</div>
<div>• Developing Leaders</div>
<div><a moz-do-not-send="true"

<div> </div>
<div>The priority levels of all EPSRC-funded fields are described here:</div>

<div> </div>
<div>National Importance is defined by EPSRC thus:</div>
<div>• the potential impact of a research area on the current or
future success of the UK economy,</div>
<div>• whether it has been identified as an area that will enable
the future development of key emerging industry(s),</div>
<div>• if the area makes a clear contribution to meeting key
societal challenges facing the UK,</div>
<div>• if the area is key to the health of other research
disciplines</div>

<div> </div>
<div>(2) </div>
<div>“…give a reasonable range of examples of the type of equipment to
be purchased and their relationship to the existing equipment base
available at the University…it is not necessary to identify
individually every single item of equipment…”</div>
<div> </div>
<div> </div>
<div>(3) The overall quality of the research area takes into account:</div>
<div>• the international standing of the research area,</div>
<div>• its potential to lead to transformative or disruptive
research,</div>
<div>• whether the area provides the UK with a unique capability
in an international context.</div>
<div> </div>
<div>Panel assessment Criteria</div>
<div>• Scientific excellence and quality of the research
programmes that will benefit from the investment in small items of
equipment. </div>
<div>• Benefits of the investment in supporting the early
career researchers </div>
<div>• Innovative use of funds to achieve greater value
from the equipment base </div>
<div>• Strong and effective planning to ensure delivery
within the timescale.”</div>
