              of Science</i> and the Research Councils UK Impact Agenda<o:p></o:p></b></p>

        <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">I am writing to
          introduce myself as the new Chief Executive of the Glasgow
          Science Centre.  I was attracted to take up the position
          because of the remarkable opportunities there are to raise the
          awareness and appreciation of science among our fellow
          citizens in Glasgow and across Scotland. I am particularly
          keen to have many more exhibits/displays in the Science Centre
          that illustrate and celebrate the success of our local
          research community.  At the same time all the funders of
          research are seeking more effective ways of communicating to
          the wider public the results, applications and policy
          implications of the science emerging from the teams they
          support.<o:p></o:p></p>
        <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><o:p> </o:p></p>
        <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Accordingly,
          following conversations with colleagues involved with <i>Glasgow
            City of Science</i> we thought that it would be useful to
          approach the research leaders in our local universities to
          discuss how the Glasgow Science Centre and <i>Glasgow City of
            Science</i> can give the best possible support to research
          groups in the city to raise their public profile and convey to
          the public the excitement, the importance and the relevance of
          their research.<o:p></o:p></p>
        <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><o:p> </o:p></p>
        <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">The Glasgow
          Science Centre has had 10 years of experience of enthusing its
          visitors about science. Recently we have held regular “Meet
          the Scientist” sessions where individual groups of university
          researchers come to talk to our weekend visitors about their
          research.  We are very willing to extend and develop this
          model to maximise the opportunities for the visitors to the
          Science Centre to learn about the exciting science that is
          going on in our city.  The Science Centre is an ideal location
          for engaging the public and our science communicators can
          provide help and advice on the presentation of the science. 
          Our outreach teams also have valuable experience of delivering
          science in other locations in the city and region and we would
          be very happy to collaborate with the universities in the
          development of suitable exhibits and events to explain and
          publicise their research at locations across the West of
          Scotland. The aim would be to greatly increase public interest
          and support for research and address part of the Impact Agenda
          promoted by the major funders of research.<o:p></o:p></p>
        <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><o:p> </o:p></p>
        <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">To move this
          agenda forward I would like to invite you to a meeting at the
          Glasgow Science Centre at <b>4pm on Tuesday 4<sup>th</sup>
            September</b>. Dr Mari Williams of the Biotechnology and
          Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) has agreed to
          give a presentation on how the BBSRC is attempting to promote
          pathways to impact. Dr. Williams was the Research Councils UK
          (RCUK) representative on the HEFCE Steering Group for the REF
          impact assessment pilot. She will illustrate her talk with
          some of the impact cases now on the BBSRC website [<a
            moz-do-not-send="true"
            href="http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/research/impact/impact-index.aspx">http://www.bbsrc.ac.uk/research/impact/impact-index.aspx</a>].
          There will also be presentations by Dr. Robin Hoyle (Director
          of Science at the Glasgow Science Centre) and Dr. Heather Reid
          (<i>Glasgow City of Science</i>) as well as ample
          opportunities for questions and discussion. <o:p></o:p></p>
        <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><span
            style="color:blue"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
        <p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">I very much hope
          that you will be able to attend this meeting and <b>if you
            wish to invite any other colleagues to attend they would be
            most welcome</b>.  The meeting should last about an hour and
          will be followed by a wine reception which will provide good
          networking opportunities and a chance to see some of the
          Science Centre’s exhibits.<o:p></o:p></p>
