Dear All,<br>
<br>
Notice of a meeting at 4pm on Sept 4th. It would be good to have
some attendees. Could you let me know if you want to attend - by end
of tomorrow? The notice is crazily short but this is the first I
remember knowing of this.<br>
<br>
Regards,<br>

<p class="MsoNormal"><b><o:p> </o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">I am writing to
introduce myself as the new Chief Executive of the Glasgow
Science Centre. I was attracted to take up the position
because of the remarkable opportunities there are to raise the
awareness and appreciation of science among our fellow
citizens in Glasgow and across Scotland. I am particularly
keen to have many more exhibits/displays in the Science Centre
that illustrate and celebrate the success of our local
research community. At the same time all the funders of
research are seeking more effective ways of communicating to
the wider public the results, applications and policy
implications of the science emerging from the teams they
support.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">Accordingly,
following conversations with colleagues involved with <i>Glasgow
City of Science</i> we thought that it would be useful to
approach the research leaders in our local universities to
discuss how the Glasgow Science Centre and <i>Glasgow City of
Science</i> can give the best possible support to research
groups in the city to raise their public profile and convey to
the public the excitement, the importance and the relevance of
their research.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">The Glasgow
Science Centre has had 10 years of experience of enthusing its
visitors about science. Recently we have held regular “Meet
the Scientist” sessions where individual groups of university
researchers come to talk to our weekend visitors about their
research. We are very willing to extend and develop this
model to maximise the opportunities for the visitors to the
Science Centre to learn about the exciting science that is
going on in our city. The Science Centre is an ideal location
for engaging the public and our science communicators can
provide help and advice on the presentation of the science.
Our outreach teams also have valuable experience of delivering
science in other locations in the city and region and we would
be very happy to collaborate with the universities in the
development of suitable exhibits and events to explain and
publicise their research at locations across the West of
Scotland. The aim would be to greatly increase public interest
and support for research and address part of the Impact Agenda
promoted by the major funders of research.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="text-align:justify">To move this
agenda forward I would like to invite you to a meeting at the
Glasgow Science Centre at <b>4pm on Tuesday 4th
September</b>. Dr Mari Williams of the Biotechnology and
Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) has agreed to
give a presentation on how the BBSRC is attempting to promote
pathways to impact. Dr. Williams was the Research Councils UK
(RCUK) representative on the HEFCE Steering Group for the REF
impact assessment pilot. She will illustrate her talk with
some of the impact cases now on the BBSRC website [<a

There will also be presentations by Dr. Robin Hoyle (Director
of Science at the Glasgow Science Centre) and Dr. Heather Reid
(<i>Glasgow City of Science</i>) as well as ample
opportunities for questions and discussion. <o:p></o:p></p>

that you will be able to attend this meeting and <b>if you
wish to invite any other colleagues to attend they would be
most welcome</b>. The meeting should last about an hour and

networking opportunities and a chance to see some of the
