significant amount of material for students is now hosted in
the My Place VLE. The
University conducts periodic audits of the Myplace VLE, to
check that material
is compliant, including that scanned from printed material and
copied from
websites etc. The results of the audit are reported to senior
management and
individual staff are advised to remove material where it is
inappropriate. The
University is also subject to external audit by the CLA (<a
href="http://www.cla.co.uk/Licencesforeducation">Copyright
Licensing Agency</a>).<o:p></o:p></span></p>

for concern. In particular the scanning by individual staff of
articles, book
chapters etc., sometimes of poor quality, in apparent
contravention of the CLA

copyright works other than
through the <a
href="http://www.strath.ac.uk/library/eresources/digitalelearning/scanningservicefore-learningatstrathclyde/">University
Scanning
Service</a> is not permitted. It is a condition of the CLA
licence
that only specific individuals are authorised to scan the
material. It is
recommended that works where the copyright is owned by the
University are also scanned
via this Service to maintain quality. <span
style="mso-spacerun:yes"> </span>The
same applies if individual departments or staff have secured
permission from
rights owners/publishers to scan a particular item. The
academic year 2012/13
internal audit of the Myplace VLE is currently underway.<o:p></o:p></span></h1>

importance of copyright compliance, particularly with respect

Professional Services may feel this memo is of less relevance
than their academic colleagues, but all parts of the
University are likely to be creating and using copyright
material, so I would respectfully ask you to give it a few
minutes of your time.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Many of you may recall the annual memo I
have sent out on copyright matters in the past. I have this
year shortened it and much of the information that used to be
in it (for example on the licences the University holds) is
now on an appropriate web page (link within the attached). I
have also focused the memo on some specific issues that are
the cause of concern. <o:p></o:p></p>
