identifying key capital investment needs in the EPSRC

style="color:black">Oxford Physics has been asked by EPSRC
to lead a community-wide scoping exercise to identify <b>capital
equipment needs across EPSRC physics in the next ‘n’ years</b>.
The output will be a short report (about 4 pages), designed
as supporting evidence for an EPSRC bid to BIS and Treasury
for additional capital investment, similar to the recent
Core Chemistry scheme (</span><a moz-do-not-send="true"

style="color:black">). The EPSRC bid for Physics
infrastructure is expected to be of the order of £30–40M. <b>If
this bid is successful, funding will be allocated on a
competitive basis, and open to application from a wide

agreed that the best way to take this exercise forward was
to form a Steering Group, comprising the Heads of Physics
(or their representatives) for 11 Departments with a large
EPSRC funding portfolio, which would coordinate the project
on behalf of the whole community. The Steering Group is
formed of representatives from the following Universities:
Bristol, Cambridge, Edinburgh, Imperial, Leeds, Manchester,
Nottingham, Oxford, Queen’s Belfast, UCL and Warwick.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

style="color:black">In line with its agreed terms of
reference, the Steering Group will meet on 26 June to draft
the report. In advance of this, <b>we would like to solicit
opinions and gather experiences from the wider Physics
community on a range of relevant issues</b>, in order to
promote informed debate.<o:p></o:p></span></p>

have assembled the attached survey. Please note that your
response to this survey will shape the form of the final
report, and have an impact on the future direction of EPSRC

detailed responses will be retained by the Steering Group
and not passed on to the EPSRC). We have attempted to make
the survey as direct as possible, but given the nature of
the topic, many questions are quite open ended in nature.
