<p class="MsoNormal">The following was sent to project students yesterday re the literature review (due in by noon on the Friday 25<sup>th</sup> October):<o:p></o:p></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">“The first assigned task for students with new projects is the so-called literature review, due this year to be submitted
<b>before noon on Friday, 25th October </b>(note the revised due date).<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">Essentially we (The Supervisors) are carrying out a 'sanity check' to establish that you can describe, in your own words, the following: <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">1) the <b>physics</b> involved in the project; <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">2) the current
<b>state-of-the-art</b> of the topic area; <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">3) how you intend to make progress (i.e. what will you actually <b><u>do</u></b><u> </u>to achieve your aims?) <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">and <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">4) how success will be<b> measured.</b> <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">I expect you to be able to do all this on a single sheet of A4, or less, with an additional sheet if required for important key references, some of which may already have been supplied to
you in the project description. Since these are early days, the literature survey is not expected to be complete by any means. The review is not assessed as such. However it will usually form the basis of the first chapter of your Final Report, and is worth
some thought and effort at this time. If you find anything unclear in these instructions, consult your supervisor or me.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">Send your work, preferably as a pdf attachment in an email to <a href="mailto:k.p.odonnell@strath.ac.uk">k.p.odonnell@strath.ac.uk</a>, before the due date: <b>noon on Friday, 25th October.</b><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">(You may find the following comments on last year's exercise to be helpful in preparing your report:<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">1) Rather few students (~20% of 50) thought to include the name of their supervisor in the heading. This is a requirement.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size:11.0pt;font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">1b) A few students forgot to include their own names and/or a project title.<br>

2) Students should try to avoid excessive use of jargon, vagueness of expression and woolly logic.<br>
<br>
3) A surprising number of students don't know how to quote literature references in a standard format.<br>
