<p class="MsoNormal">To update you all on our current position regarding funding and PGR recruitment:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We are currently progressing well towards our targets for PGR recruitment for this academic year but
<b>there are still many opportunities available to obtain funding for good students</b> so, as per the message at the recent Departmental Committee, I would encourage you all to keep actively looking for PGR candidates. Specifically<span style="color:#1F497D">,</span>
the opportunities are as follows:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>Departmental funding:<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Currently, we have allocated most of our Tranche 1 and Tranche 2 (EPSRC DTG and University) funding to applicants. However, there are various mechanisms by which some of this money could become available to us again (for example we have
students who have Carnegie <span style="color:#1F497D">A</span>ward applications under consideration and not all applicants convert) so we will be running a second competition for remaining funds in early June. Details to follow.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We will also seek to assist anyone who can leverage external contacts (industry, facilities etc) to bring in eg half a studentship from outside.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>STFC Allocation:<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We have <b>one fully funded PhD</b> studentship from our STFC allocation to be filled. This must be for a project that is at least associated with the area of astronomy and we welcome applications for this.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>International Max Planck Partnership:<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Studentships exist for research in experimental and theoretical quantum optics for which we seek applications.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><b>University Tranche 3:<o:p></o:p></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">This competition is expected in early summer for outstanding students so we look to have a good departmental showing in this.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Every member of staff has been allocated a FindaPhD slot for advertising
