<p class="MsoNormal">Earlier this year, Information Services circulated information on the plans to upgrade the software image in the centrally-managed computer areas – around 1500 computers spread across the bookable teaching rooms and the library and a number
of drop-in areas. This summer, we are installing 300 new computers in the James Weir and Stenhouse buildings. We will also be migrating all of our existing student systems to Windows 10, and updating the software manifest to allow us to gain CyberEssentials+
accreditation for our student computing environment. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We contacted all IT staff and academic staff who have previously requested software installations, to confirm requirements.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">We are now releasing a “first cut” of the new environment, to allow testing. It contains a number of improvements to the user experience; from a student experience perspective, one notable improvement is a substantially quicker login time.
It currently contains about 90% of the software that will be deployed in the final image.

<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">We would encourage all staff who have requested software or are involved in using software for teaching to try out the new system and check that their software operates as expected. There are almost 100 software applications in the build;
while we can verify that the application starts, we do not have the specialist knowledge to check the detailed operation of all components. Some applications are still in progress and may not be present (please refer to above list on ITSpotlight)<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">The test build has now been deployed on 20 computers in the main library (adjacent to the helpdesk) and will be available for testing your applications from Monday the 12<sup>th</sup> of August.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">We would appreciate all feedback (any changes/issues/questions) on this software ASAP, to allow us to finalise the build and begin a wider-scale deployment in advance of the start of term.<o:p></o:p></p>
