Dear Colleagues

National Physical Laboratory: New Call for EPSRC iCASE proposals

As in recent years, the EPSRC has, again, allocated ten iCASE studentships to NPL for collaborative projects starting in Oct 2020. Based on the success of last year’s competition, NPL would like
to invite its Strategic Partners, Strathclyde and Surrey, to each submit 3 proposals to this year’s competition.

In an announcement today, NPL scientists have been invited to identify suitable partners in HEIs, and industry, to work with to develop a 1-page proposal (see attached). NPL’s Heads of Science (HoS),
the scientists in their respective areas, and the University Liaison Managers, along with academics at Strathclyde and Surrey, will now work closely to ensure that suitable proposals are developed.

Deputy Associate Principal, Billy Kerr, will coordinate the selection of the Strathclyde Strategic Partner nominated proposals in collaboration with the Vice-Deans (Research), Professors Bernie Conway
and Rob Martin. Strathclyde-based supervisors are strongly encouraged to connect with Linden Fradet (linden.fradet@npl.co.uk) and the proposed NPL-based scientific collaborator(s) to ensure NPL strategic research
alignment prior to internal submission of any individual proposal. Please note that NPL sign off by the appropriate HoS is required before submitting internally to RKES for consideration.

Any Strathclyde academics considering an application should also engage the relevant Vice-Dean (Research) at the earliest opportunity to explore the potential for any matching studentship contribution.
External contributions should also be sought as a route to establish partnering studentships. It should be noted that, for this round, at least one each of the Strathclyde and Surrey nominated proposals must have a matched studentship associated with the
iCASE submission.

In addition to the Strategic Partner selection process, detailed above, each HoS will run a local NPL-based competition working with the scientists in their respective areas. The nominated 3 proposals
from each of the two Strategic Partners will be submitted along with up to 24 NPL proposals, and the 30 proposals in total will be evaluated by the NPL iCASE Panel. As in previous years, applications will be considered in all areas of measurement science.
As before, engagement with industry is encouraged. This year, as part of the assessment process, there is a particular emphasis on applications where interactions have been extended to include SMEs.

In support of the Strategic Partners’ ambitions to collaborate on specific research topics,
applications with a particular focus on Space and related technologies research are encouraged as part of this year’s NPL iCASE round. Note also that submissions covering all other relevant areas of research are also valid.

All proposals should be developed using the attached template. It should be noted that there is no guarantee that one proposal from each HoS shortlist will be chosen for an award by the NPL iCASE
Panel. The panel will score all proposals against the following criteria:

• Science and Engineering quality

The NPL iCASE Panel will be made up of NPL senior scientists and chaired by Richard Burguete (PGI Director). It will allocate the ten iCASE awards from the proposals put forward. Industrial and
Academic leverage have, again, been included as selection criteria, as the PGI has set a strategy to drive the development of a model where Research Council-funded PhDs are additionally supported by industry and university partners.
