As indicated at the dept. committee, I have only 6 submission of projects (plus mine 2) in spite of two calls. Every academic in experimental optics/lasers/microscopy/solid-state/nanoscience needs to supply
at least one project and research staff is strongly encouraged. In addition there are about 2-3 needed in theory and again 2-3 needed in plasmas. Please consider also whether two students could do an experiment together and write up different aspects of data
in the end. I am very aware of the limitations to all our time, in particular in summer, but the MSc constitute an important element of strategy of the department. We need to be flexible to arrange absence at group or colleague level.

If you have issues to provide space or material, we can look at using experiments in the 3rd year lab
https://classes.myplace.strath.ac.uk/course/view.php?id=15591 with the script as starting point from which the students can be more explorative. There are several experiments on optical
fibres, SHG, Michelson interferometers, laser diodes, microwaves, operational amplifiers etc, which might be suitable. Please let Melanie and me know if you are looking favourably at this.

PGT recruitment has been very successful this year with 24 students in the new cohort and four further from the former cohort possibly progressing to project provided they pass resit
exams. As in previous years, interest is not equally distributed over the departmental research groups with maybe 2-3 projects in theory and the same in plasmas but the majority in nanoscience/solid state science, lasers, optics. This means that every academic
in the latter areas will need to provide at least one project and I encourage research staff to consider to propose also a project in collaboration with your supervisor.

Please supply the project descriptions on the attached template to Melanie,
melanie.mcinanny@strath.ac.uk, till 29th Nov 2019.

Projects will be allocated earlier this year than in the previous years with the selection process finished middle of February 2020. Then students will do a literature survey supervised
by the prospective project supervisors as part of the transferable skills class PH949 to prepare for the project. This will be light touch (pass/fail, no mark) but supervisors must feedback on scientific writing, referencing and critical analysis.

If a student negotiates with you a bespoke project (not in the project booklet) till middle of January, he/she can bypass the selection process. However, every project in the project
