still short on projects. We have 13 students. I have only 13
projects (from only 10 supervisors) and one commitment for a
bespoke project. Many thanks to those who contributed. However,
this number of projects constitutes zero choice and will look
very bad to students.</p>
<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;vertical-align:middle">The
teaching committee decided that every experimental PI is
expected to submit one project, which should be experimental
(ideal) or a design/computational/data analysis project closely
related to an experiment (we might be in a position where we
need to revert to that anyway if the situation in summer is not
developing as hoped). For the theoreticians: I expect interest
in two, max. three, theoretically oriented projects. I assume
that the guys are already talking to you. If I do not get
theoretical project proposals in, I expect that you are reacting
positively if the students contact you.</p>

looking for propositions for the MSc projects this year, please.
This year interest seems to be quite distributed covering all
groups of the department but there is still a dominant need for
experimental projects in the
solid-state/nanoscience/optics/laser areas.<br>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-top-alt:auto;vertical-align:middle">Guidance
to the students is that current planning is based on delivery of
on-campus experience, including experimental ones, if the
situation allows in summer. So please propose a corresponding
project but consider a bit how it could be adapted to a (old)
data analysis/computational/literature-based project if things
do not go the way we want them to go. One option to ease the
pressure on space in research labs is also to use the space and
the equipment of the 3rd year labs to supply practical
experience within the relatively wide area available on level 4.
So if you are willing to supervise one of the 3rd year
experiments starting from the scripts and going to more open
ended investigations from that, please indicate that to Melanie
with a list of the experiments you would feel confident to
supervise. This can be either instead of a project description
or as a second option in addition to a proposed one (I will
equalize the load):</p>
