<o:p></o:p></span></b></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:10.0pt;font-family:"Arial",sans-serif">New fluorophores with tailored (photo)physical, chemical, and biological properties are required to capitalise on rapid advances in optical microscopy. Using an example of our
development of a series of boron-based fluorescent dyes for two-photon fluorescence microscopy, I will show how structure‒property relationships can be used to tailor optical performance of dyes (two-photon absorption cross-section, red-shifted absorption,
photostability, quantum yield, and lifetime) and how further structural modification can be used to build on this understanding to produce dyes with the necessary properties for live-cell imaging. I will also briefly discuss some on-going projects in the development
of dyes for gated-STED microscopy and in photosensitizers for photodynamic and photothermal therapy.<b><o:p></o:p></b></span></p>
