This year we have actually
a few keen guys who asked whether they could start with the
project early or do other research work in semester 2. I posted
the following response to students: "I have gotten requests
whether it is possible to start with the project earlier than
May 26. This is welcome laudable engagement on the one hand, but
creates issues with treating all students fairly and on equal
terms on the other hand.

Of course, nobody can stop you from doing an informal unsupervised
literature survey in the project area before May 26. If an
academic agrees, you can do an informal placement in their lab
over sem 2, but you need to keep in mind that you need to balance
that with your obligations in the taught modules which should be
your main focus according to the study plan. If you fail an exam
or do not get the mark you wanted to, these voluntary
extra-curricular activities do not count as mitigating personal
circumstances. There is no obligation for academics to take you on
and you can use it only to gain general skills in the area.
Results obtained in an informal placement MUST NOT form part of
the project report to be fair to all students."
