<li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0cm;mso-list:l1 level1 lfo1">Supervisors, Independent Markers, Chairs all mark the reports and attend the viva<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0cm;mso-list:l1 level1 lfo1">Viva slots are 1 hour<o:p></o:p></li><ul style="margin-top:0cm" type="circle">
<li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0cm;mso-list:l1 level2 lfo1">Markers convene privately to briefly discuss the report marks, identify any particular topics or issues to cover in viva<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0cm;mso-list:l1 level2 lfo1">Students invited into viva and will have 30 mins of questions. Student will be requested to concisely summarise in a few minutes their project, outlining the motivation, background,
project activities, results, and conclusions. This is to be done without Powerpoint etc., but they may wish to use pen/paper or a whiteboard. The Chair will preside over proceedings with the viva committee taking turns to ask questions. These may cover the
background physics, aspects of the project itself, the report, further work etc.<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0cm;mso-list:l1 level2 lfo1">Students are allowed (and encouraged) to bring their report and may refer to it throughout. Annotations are allowed. Requests of other materials will need to be discussed with, and
approved by the Chair in consultation with the other markers.<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0cm;mso-list:l1 level2 lfo1">After the conclusion of the questioning, the markers again convene in private to agree on a mark. If required, moderation of the report mark may also be performed, or continued offline
if there is insufficient time.<o:p></o:p></li></ul>
<li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0cm;mso-list:l1 level1 lfo1">If the report marks spread exceeds 10 marks, then moderation will be conducted by the Chair to determine reasons for the disparity and to develop a closer consensus of marks to narrow
the spread to 10 marks or below. If such a consensus cannot be achieved, the marks with spread exceeding 10 marks are to be returned with a short (a few sentences) explanation by the Chair of the nature of the disagreement for the benefit of the External Examiners.<o:p></o:p></li><li class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:0cm;mso-list:l1 level1 lfo1">I’ve put in placeholder locations for now. For TIC locations, the Supervisor or Chair should book a suitable room and inform myself and the student. I have made some bookings for JA824
and tried to schedule some vivas there. If you wish to change/update the location of the viva, just let me know and I’ll update the schedule.<o:p></o:p></li></ul>
