<p class="MsoNormal">Further to my earlier email regarding the department’s recommendation for completing section 903 of the RDP course (see below): we have now put in place the online ‘Grant Writing for PGR Students’ course that will take care of this requirement
for our 1<sup>st</sup> and 2<sup>nd</sup> year PhD students for whom RDP is a requirement. The material is available to you through Spider under the class code PH980. I hope that all is self-explanatory but feel free to get in touch should any questions arise.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">I will have discussed with some of you during the end of year vivas the need to assess the department’s position re the RDP course that some of you (new 1<sup>st</sup> year and 2<sup>nd</sup> year PhD students not involved in a CDT) have
to take. <o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Following the completion of the recent assessments, we have now performed this review after RDPs first year of operation. Based on this we have put in place the following guidelines for students to obtain all of the necessary credits:<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">RDP is broken down into 5 sections: 901-904 and electives.<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">901 – 20 credit requirement – is covered by your SUPA Graduate School class requirements<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">902 – 10 credit requirement – made up from completing the two end of year assessments (1st and 2nd year) which are worth 5 credits each<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">903 – 10 credit requirement – see below<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">904 – 10 credit requirement – Complete the ‘Becoming an Engaging Researcher’ course<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Electives – 10 credit requirement – are covered by SUPA Graduate School class requirements<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><o:p> </o:p></p>
<p class="MsoNormal">Course 903 is a problem and so we have set up an online Grant Writing for PGR Students course that we will encourage you to take. This will be done in your own time (ie it is not timetabled) and teaches you in small groups how to prepare
a grant proposal, which you will then submit to your supervisor for assessment. Please note that any students who graduated from our own MPhys degree will have taken the course needed for 903 already and can claim this as prior learning.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">The online course is currently undergoing testing with a small group of students and will be widely available as soon as possible.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">Please note that these are only recommendations and students may follow alternative plans if they are more suitable or open to them. I am simply attempting to bring a bit of structure to the RDP process. As always, please continue to log
