Physics Alumnus Colin Wallace (1991)
Colin Wallace is a Senior Systems Engineer at Ciena. He graduated in 1991 with a degree in Laser Physics & Optoelectronics
I was good at Physics at school and enjoyed the subject and Strathclyde is a good university in a good location. I began my career in R&D, working for BICC Communications. After that, I moved in to various roles across the company, doing a spell in Marketing, Business Development, Pre-Sales Engineering and Engineering Management. I also worked on the telecommunications system for the Channel Tunnel Rail link. This was the first new Railway to be built in the UK for over 50 years.
I currently work for Ciena, a telecommunications equipment vendor as a Senior Systems Engineer. This is a technical pre-sales role, working with the customer to deliver solutions for their network requirements. I am currently working on the design of the BT 21st Century Network.
I particularly enjoy working with customers to give them a technical understanding of our products and then engineering the solution to give the best value for the customer requirements. Although I work in a technical sales role, I still need good technical knowledge and the grounding that the physics degree has given me has stood me in good stead.
Away from work, I enjoy Rugby, Cricket, Football, and Golf.
