Colleagues

The note below comes from David McBeth. He's asking for a 'trawl' of
activity for these Scottish Innovation Centres. My own radar screen on
this is the life sciences, where I am aware of at least 7
differently-named, and differently-combined groupings (some of which are
overlapping) in the West of Scotland! It looks like a collection of
battleships. What David McBeth is calling for is disclosure of
activity, as highlighted in the format below.

If you could channel responses through Pat, we'll report them on to
RKES. We will then also have a good sighting of the activity at Faculty
level.

It looks like there will need to be some prioritisation and development
of strategy for this.

By way of context, I'm attaching the circular for the 'call', the
expression of interest form and a cut-down powerpoint from Paul Hagan,
which gives some insight into the plan.

Slide 5 should Scotland's BERD (Business expenditure on R&D) and Slide 6
shows the HERD (Higher Education expenditure on R&D). The ploy is use
the providence of the HERD to make up the shortcomings of the BERD and
create a stronger economy. That's enough 'Adam Smith 101'.

Thanks

Iain

Dear Colleagues

I expect that most of you will be aware of the above competition from
the SFC, which has a deadline for applications of 20 June 2012.

If you are not aware of the call, check out
http://www.sfc.ac.uk/news_events_circulars/Circulars/2012/SFC0612.aspx

It is already clear that there is a huge amount of activity going on in
HEIs across Scotland in relation to this call (disproportionate to the
number of SICs that are likely to be funded across Scotland -- I
understand informally that approximately 5 in total, each funded at c.
£2M for 5 years is the SFC's intent).

Universities Scotland via its RKEC and RCDG groups is at present trying
to identify and share knowledge about bids in preparation, and so I
would ask that you please let me (on behalf of the ADPs and the
Principal) know of any bids that you or staff in your Faculty are
working on -- ideally in the format below:

    * [approximate title]
    * [lead institution]
    * [other institutions / organisations involved]
    * [lead academic names]
    * [level of SFC awareness]

Depending on the level of activity within Strathclyde on this issue, the
ADPs may decide that we need to apply institutional priorities (and
obviously support as well) to any Strathclyde submissions but we don't
see any point in designing a process until we assess the overall level
of demand.

I will of course share with you the collated information about
Strathclyde once I have it.

Thanks in advance for your assistance with this.

Regards

David
