Dear All,

This starts next week and the deadline for registering has been
extended. If you have something reasonably good to write up for
publication I would suggest going along.

John

Science Staff,

Do you have material ready for a publication but can't find the time to write it up?

Do you want to aim higher when publishing your latest work?

Do you want to aim for top leading academic journals?

If the answer is yes to one or more of these we would like to encourage you to join the Autumn PUBLICATION CHALLENGE (please see attached advert for details).

Please note that this is NOT a paper writing course- it is aimed at those who have material ready for publication and have experience in paper writing. The idea is to provide academic staff (at all levels, this could include senior PhD students and postdocs) to write their papers while taking advantage of peer support and feedback and get papers submitted by Christmas, by taking advantage of peer-to-peer support, self- learning and some low level guidance.

The scheme will take place over a 10 week period during October-December and will have three intermediate deadlines and peer-to-peer meetings with some guidance. The scheme involves three meeting dates - 1st one being the 23rd October and additional dates to be announced shortly. The Autumn Publication Challenge is a Strathclyde Programme in Research and Leadership initiative specifically aimed at Science and Engineering Faculties. To register for this challenge or for more information please email spiral at strath.ac.uk

The challenge involves three meeting dates with the following aims:-

Session 1
Prior to session 1: Instructions will be sent and participants will be asked to notify us of their research area and possible high quality journals they wish to aim for. Delegates will be asked to prepare a 1-2 page outline of their paper.
Outline of paper: This would describe the main points of their paper and a proposed structure including figures, schemes and key references. It should contain a few lines on background/context and what is new about their work (who does it provide a step change or key contribution) and should contain the most important references. During session 1 the participants will provide feedback to each other relating to readability, clarity of objectives and whether it demonstrates incremental work or addresses a key challenge and provides a step change.
Session 1:
Short introduction session to explain the scheme.
Participants will be allocated to their peer groups (approximately 4, organized according to topic and / or journal aiming for).
Provide feedback on each other's outlines with regards to readability, clarity of objectives, does it demonstrate an incremental/step change paper, etc.

Session 2
Prior to session 2: Participants will be asked to prepare an approximately 4-6 page draft with a full introduction to provide context, all figures and figure captions and main results/discussion points as bullet points.
Session 2: Q&A sessions with a number of leading Strathclyde academics who have published in leading journals/ who have a prolific publication record/ are very highly cited.
This is followed by a breakout session where papers drafts are discussed.

Session 3
Prior to session 3: Delegates should prepare a complete copy of their paper and cover letter.
Session 3: Experiences from a journal editor to give their views on what constitutes a good paper, how they handle decision making on what to send out for review.
This is followed by a breakout session where papers drafts are discussed prior to submission.
