[Academic] VIP visit on Friday and Common Room

Dear All,

A couple of things:

1. As you may have seen work has started on level 8. Access to the 
kitchen will be maintained as long as possible. In addition, the Head of 
Civil Engineering has agreed that our staff can use their staff common 
room on JA level 7 (7.31) while our common room is out of action. Please 
take her up on this kind offer and, of course, treat their room well!

2. The Minister for Universities and Science, David Willetts, is 
scheduled to pay a brief visit to the Department on Friday morning. He 
will visit labs. on level 1 to open labs. working on Intelligent 
Lighting - a collaborative venture involving Martin Dawson (Institute of 
Photonics), Pete Skabara (Chemistry) and our Semiconductor Spectroscopy 
Group - and to announce a major research programme led by Martin Dawson. 
Please keep the level 1 entrance area and corridors free from any 
disruption between about 10.30 and 12.30 on Friday. The Minister is also 
here to find out more about TIC, Fraunhofer and other Strathclyde 
initiatives he heard about at the THE University of the Year Awards and, 
it seems, to announce another major success involving Strathclyde. Very 
good times for our university.
