Dear Colleagues
It has recently come to light that several of the Open Access journals
in which the Department's research tends to get published are not now
considered to satisfy the RCUK requirements for full Gold Open Access.
This means that you will not be able to get publication charges for
research articles submitted to such journals paid for by the University
(from the account set up with RCUK money for this express purpose). If
you submit articles to these journals you will have to find the money
yourself if you want Gold Open Access. Examples of the journals which
are not compliant are Optics Express, and New Journal of Physics, so
this will be an issue for some people.
I asked for a list of RCUK compliant journals, but apparently the list
changes too rapidly to be of use. If you want to check whether a journal
that you are considering currently satisfies the RCUK requirements I
have copied below a paragraph from the Information Services Directorate
on how to do this.
Regards
John
RE your request for a list of compliant journals: There is good news and
bad news. The bad news is that such a list would be ineffective. It
would quickly become obsolete such is the speed with which publishers
are altering their OA deposit and licence terms in light of the RCUK
mandate. But the good news is that JISC (with support from
RCUK/Wellcome Trust) provide an up-to-date data service with access to
the policies of almost all ISSN registered publications. It also
provides decision support on whether publishing in a particular journal
will fulfil the RCUK mandate. These services are SHERPA FACT
<http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/fact/> (http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/fact/ use this
to check compliancy with RCUK) and SHERPA ROMEO
<http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/> (http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/ use
this to check publisher copyright and deposit policies). Alternatively,
simply email openaccesspublications at strath.ac.uk
<mailto:openaccesspublications at strath.ac.uk> if you are considering
publishing in a specific journal and we can check the compliancy
implications on your behalf. Guidance on procedures for Article
Publication Charges is available at the Open Access Services

(http://www.strath.ac.uk/library/usingthelibrary/openaccessservices/) page.
