Dear Kevin, dear All
I personally don't like very much the policy of the Nature group to launch more journals to squeeze the established ones, but it seems to be a matter of fact that Nature Communications has an increasing number of interesting articles, so one should consider to include it in the Nature package.
Regards
Thorsten

Subject: [Academic] Library matters
Hi all
with a final deadline of 8 November, I need to report back to the Faculty Library Committee with a Physics response to the following proposals:
1, Allocation of resources:
Note
Allocation
2013-14
2012-13
% change
(a)
journals and databases
£1,051,969
£1,054,514
-0.2%
(b)
inter-library loans
£665
£874
-23.9%
(b)
e-books
£6,572
£0
(c)
books
£30,332
£28,509
6.4%
Total
£1,089,538
£1,083,897
0.5%
Note
(a)
projected cost
(b)
2012/13 actual
(c)
residue of allocation
(NB: In fact, we are only invited to approve this decision by the Library Board.)
Strathclyde student feedback on Library Resources is overwhelmingly positive.
2. Journal subscriptions:
Library representatives are asked to ensure that the process for reviewing serial subscriptions is undertaken in each department as follows:
Action
Deadline
Library representative to identify high cost per use or low use serials for potential cancellation
Monday 28 October
Library staff to advise on opportunities for cancelling or swapping each of those
Monday 4 November
Library representative to consult colleagues in department on potential cancellations and notify Library staff
Friday 8 November
[Action: Library representatives with PMcC]
(PMcC is Pamela McLelland at the Library.)
Members are reminded that cancellation of a serial is often a complex matter, as some (shown in bold on the serials list) are offered as part of bigger packages and some can only be cancelled if another serial of equal value was ordered. In addition, some publishers only allow a small percentage cancellation each year (e.g. Elsevier will permit cancellations up to 1% of overall subscription value in 2013-14). Cancellations or swaps which are no cost, low cost or cost neutral will be implemented immediately. Thereafter, Library staff will negotiate other cancellations or swaps, taking account of wider University and/or purchasing consortium interests.
Since I will be away from 7-12 Nov, I would prefer to have your comments and suggestions for new journal acquisitions by the end of this month. See the attached spreadsheet for the figures; journals which cost more than £50 a shot are at risk of cancwllation. Last year's losses and gains are listed in the second spreadsheet.
