I WOULD BE GRATEFUL IF YOU COULD HIGHLIGHT THIS OPPORTUNITY TO STAFF WITHIN YOUR DEPARTMENT AND TO STUDENTS IN THEIR 3RD YEAR OF A 4-YEAR DEGREE AND 4TH YEAR OF A 5-YEAR DEGREE.
Application forms and further details (including departmental contact details for students) for 2014 will be available shortly. The deadline for the receipt of applications by Departments will be Friday 7 March 2014.
PURPOSE
The University of Strathclyde is committed to providing its 21st Century graduates with opportunities and experiences to develop a range of attributes such as enquiry-mindedness and innovation. Interns at Strathclyde will provide an opportunity for undergraduate students from all Faculties to gain experience of relevant and purposeful research during the summer vacation before their final year, enhancing their understanding of their discipline by providing practical experience. The scheme will provide valuable insights for students into the nature and culture of research activity and add to research informed education. It will encourage undergraduates to see the links between research and the complex questions that business, industry and public services are addressing. It will also encourage students to consider postgraduate careers in research or related enquiry-based professional fields.
ELIGIBILITY
The programme is aimed at 3rd Year undergraduate students of the University of Strathclyde. Students in either the 3rd or the 4th Year of an integrated masters’ degree are also eligible for this award. Students who have already completed their undergraduate studies or who are in their final year of study are not eligible to apply. Students may apply for more than one internship but supervisors must ensure that only one award is taken up. Candidates should be encouraged to apply for the Carnegie Undergraduate Vacation Scholarship given its prestige and if successful make this their first choice. If successful, the candidate should accept the Carnegie Undergraduate Vacation Scholarship given its prestige. Those students who are successful in obtaining the Carnegie Undergraduate Vacation Scholarship will be invited to take part in the research internship development programme. These students will receive an additional sum upon completion of this aspect of the placement to make it of equal financial value to the interns awards as an incentive to accept the award from the Carnegie Trust.
RESEARCH INVOLVEMENT
The research activity in which Strathclyde undergraduates will be involved must constitute an independent, self-contained programme of enquiry that has its own specified aims and objectives. It might, where relevant, form part of a larger programme of work in which the student, the department or research group is engaged. Additionally the research could be undertaken in local and regional organisations, businesses and community agencies and development projects which the department or student has links. Any type of research activity that is normally conducted within the Faculties will be considered for support and sponsorship. All research that is conducted, on or off campus, will be subject to relevant legislation and regulations, including ethical approval, health and safety requirements, risk analysis and the University policy on academic misconduct.
The Interns at Strathclyde funding cannot be used to support research that forms part of a credit bearing programme. While the experience should benefit a student's studies, the actual work explicitly must not be part of any undergraduate degree programme. The outcome of the internship in terms of data should not directly contribute to final year honours work.
Where an external partner (private, public or charitable organisation) is involved, a contribution to the funding the internship should be sought.
