This is about developing a University-based Dropbox-type thing. Many of
you are large generators of research data and will have a view on how
this should work. If so please fill out the spreadsheet and reply
directly to Claire. Also give comments if appropriate. Please copy me in
if you do so.
Regards
John

Dear Colleagues,
I hope you are aware that as part of the Research Data Management &
Sharing (RDMS) Project
<https://moss.strath.ac.uk/infostratportal/ResearchDataManagementAndSharing/Pages/Home.aspx>,
we are seeking to implement an institutional solution that will offer
the data storage functionality Strathclyde researchers currently obtain
from cloud storage providers like Dropbox, SugarSync and OneDrive. Aside
from the University's responsibility to provide sufficient storage for
research data, the purpose of introducing such a system at Strathclyde
is to reduce the risk of inappropriate disclosure, loss of data and/or
transfer of ownership rights that can potentially occur when using
external cloud storage systems.
There are a range of systems that we could select to provide this
service, which will be called Strathcloud, however it is important that
we select the best system for the needs of our researchers.
We are implementing the following process and *would welcome your
participation*:
Step 1: Identification of requirements for selection of a solution: see
below.
Step 2: Weighting of requirements by importance: rating the relative
importance of each requirement to you.
Step 3: Comparison of available products against the list of
requirements: using online demos (provided for you to watch at your
convenience) of no more than 3 systems to score the available options.
Step 4: Selection of a system for pilot testing: this will be made using
your scorings of the demos and the weightings you previously provided.
Step 5: Recommendation for adoption/Rejection of piloted system: On the
basis of the scorings, a system will be recommended for use and testers
can accept or reject this recommendation. If rejected we would return
to step 4.
Step 6: Implementation of selected system by the central infrastructure
team.
*We are now seeking your assistance with Step 1*. Please find attached
a draft list of requirements. We have put this list together to get
things started but would welcome the addition of requirements that you
feel have been missed -- we hope you might have aspects of a service you
currently use that you particularly like and would like to see
replicated in the system at Strathclyde or particularly dislike and
would like to avoid.
*Please return the list of requirements to me by Friday 28^th March* in
order that we can collate the requirements and move quickly on to Step
2. *Please do not be discouraged from taking part on the basis that you
cannot participate in all steps* ; we expect the numbers of volunteers
to fluctuate during the process but would appreciate your feedback to
make sure that we have the best chance of making the correct decision.
Please feel free to forward this email to colleagues who may be
interested in participating.

Administrators for wider circulation where appropriate_.
Thanks
Claire
