Dear All,

No nominations came in for the Fred Stern prize and I want to encourage
people to reflect on those who graduated in 2013.

We seem to oscillate from years with lots of very strong nominations to
years with none. Je ne sais pas pourquoi......

Same arrangements as below but 12 June as final deadline.

Rob

Nominations are sought for the Fred Stern Prize, the Department's prestigious prize for a PhD student who has demonstrated performance of exceptionally high quality.

Candidates should have had their PhD viva in the calendar year *2013*.

The nominator will normally be the supervisor and/or external examiner, but any member of staff can submit a nomination. Nominations will be assessed by the Head of Department and the Postgraduate Tutor, taking advice as appropriate.

A nomination should include a brief supporting statement which may include e.g.

- comments from the external examiner report (copies are held in the student record - ask Kayleigh if you want to see these)
- publications arising from the thesis/project
- prizes/awards or other external recognition of quality associated with the thesis/project

Nominations should be submitted to me by Wednesday 4th June 2014.

Gordon.
