[Academic] FW: Compulsory Training for PhD Physics Students

Dear All,

Please see below a request from SUPA regarding additional training that is being provided to students participating in CDT or ITN-type activities in addition to SUPA courses. I can deal with the PGCert issue but I’d be grateful for any information on the other matters. I realise this is yet another burden on time but it is hoped that it will be brief and that, ultimately, we can come up with a sensible approach to PGR training that doesn’t overburden our students so your input will be useful.

Subject: Compulsory Training for PhD Physics Students

Dear GSMC
At a recent EC meeting, it was noted that there is an increase in EU funding of international training networks and that these grants demand that there should be additional training, eg specific courses, summer schools etc. As a result, I have been asked to poll partner universities to assess what further compulsory training has been planned for students in order to avoid duplication.
Please could you provide me with the details of compulsory training for physics PhD students at your university. This may be at school level, college level, university wide. It could be EU ITNs etc, linked to CDTs and may only affect small groups of students or alternatively the whole Physics PhD cohort. For example, at Strathclyde University it appears that all PGRs are being required to complete the equivalent of a PGCert in Research Skills.
