I'd be grateful if you would provide the info Sarah requires by her deadline (or let us know if that's unrealistic). Sarah hasn't been explicit, but I assume that the info is required for all taught courses and research programmes.

Subject: Guidance on Charging for Course Materials
Dear all,
I am currently working with the USSA VPE to revise the Guidance on Charging for Course Materials<http://www.strath.ac.uk/media/ps/cs/gmap/academicaffairs/policies/University_Guidance_on_Charging_for_Course_Material.pdf> which was last revised in 2009. As you will probably know the University now has to comply with recent guidance issued by the Competition and Market Authority on consumer protection law (attached) which states that:
you must provide prospective students with material information – including about the courses you offer, the structure of courses, and the fees/costs. This should be given before they make a decision about which courses and HE providers to apply to. This includes information given in writing, visually and verbally. You should make sure this information is accurate and you should not omit important information that could affect students’ decisions.
This means that all costs that the student is likely to incur during studying the particular course they are interested in must be made explicit to the student. The guidance states:
other extra costs students are likely to incur, for example for field trips, equipment, materials, bench fees or studio hire. You should indicate how much these extra costs are or are likely to be. Where they are unknown or uncertain, you should set out how they will be calculated and whether they are optional or mandatory for under-taking or passing the course. It is particularly important that you highlight any course costs that are likely to have a direct impact on the outcome of students’ academic success, such as a field trip on which a piece of work will be based.
It would therefore be helpful in reviewing the guidance and also in helping to meet the above obligations, that we have a full picture of any additional (hidden) costs that students might incur for each course eg field trips, lab coats, safety goggles, PPE equipment, membership of PVG scheme etc. This information would be particularly helpful if there are any inconsistencies. For example we know through a previous discussion with the VDA’s at a SEES/ VDA meeting in March that some courses pay for membership of the PVG Scheme while others do not, similarly with lab coats.
I’d be grateful if you could get back to me with this information please by Friday 19th June. If this timeline is unrealistic please let me know.
Many thanks
