Dear All,
Please see below a message from the Vice Dean Research regarding this year's Tranche 3 process. It is obviously disappointing that the University has withdrawn T3 this year but we are hopeful of some alternative at Faculty level. I would encourage you to liaise with Rob if you have potential candidates as per his email below.
Cheers,
Neil

Subject: Fwd: Tranch 3 Studentship Funding
Dear All,
Please see below a message explaining that Tranche 3 funding from the University for the coming year has to been withdrawn. I regret to have to pass this on so close to the deadline. Please spread the news to colleagues in your Department as appropriate.
As explained in the message from the Associate Deputy Principal, the importance of these studentships is clear and we're hunting for anything that can be done using existing Faculty budgets to match funding that was planned to go alongside T3 applications. If you have promising T3 cases you want considered in this way, please send me a brief summary by one line answers to the following questions, before 26/6/15:
1. Quality of named student: e.g. 1st class Masters students from Strathclyde, prize winner in X
2. Amount of matching funding available from Dept and/or supervisor and/or external partner.
3. Any other essential info (e.g. strategic importance of research area)
Regards,
Rob

Dear Colleagues,
Tranche 3 Studentships
Following on from individual discussions with each of you over the past days, I now write to confirm that, as part of the University's commitment to meeting the 2015/2016 budget, it has been decided that funding for new Tranche 3 PhD scholarships will be withdrawn for the coming academic year. In relation to the less than optimal timing of this announcement, with the University budget only having just been approved, I am only now in a position to communicate this outcome to you.
Considering the value of such a (Tranche 3-type) system to identify and secure excellent PhD students, and that a number of proposals will have already been constructed, I understand that alternative mechanisms to provide replacement support may be available within individual Faculties. In line with this, academic applicants should be encouraged to explore whether Departmental/School or Faculty resources are available to replace the £10k per student (per annum) funds that would have been available via the Tranche 3 route, with the attraction of business/industry/other external funding being used to build leverage in support of Departmental/School and/or Faculty resources.
Many thanks to all of you for your understanding and continued support through this developing process.
Regards,
Billy
