Hi All,

Is there anyone who has an appropriate activity and would be willing to participate at a Careers Fair that is focused on Green Jobs/STEM careers for S2/3 on Tuesday the 15th of September at the Glasgow Science Centre?

See below for more details.

Good morning,

Public engagement opportunity:

Please see details below of a careers fair at Glasgow Science Centre for S2/3 school pupils. They are looking for fun, interactive demos and activities for the market place which highlight a particular career area and hope that University researchers will be available to participate. Could you please circulate this message to appropriate colleagues/research students and if you or they are available to participate ask them to contact Steph McKendry (Widening Access Manager) for more information in the first instance?

Best wishes

Hi June,

That’s great. I’ve made the changes to the brochure.

On a different matter, I was hoping you could circulate information about an upcoming event to the Public Engagement Group. I’ve been contacted by Mark Irwin, Principal Officer for STEM in Glasgow City Council Education. He’s organising a Green Jobs/STEM careers fair for S2/S3 pupils in Glasgow Science Centre and is looking for people from Strathclyde to participate in a market place (ideally with fun, interactive demos and activities that highlight potential career paths). The information is below. Would you be able to email the group to see if anyone is able to participate? Please ask them to contact me in the first instance.

Thanks
Steph

Glasgow City Council is running an employability event focused on Green Jobs/STEM careers for S2/3 on Tuesday the 15th of September at the Glasgow Science Centre. It will be a fun, interactive and engaging event for our young people to expose them to the potential career and further study pathways that STEM is integral to.

The day will consist of:

* Meet the employers market place. Market place set up in Science Atrium where groups of young people will engage directly with employers/higher education institutions

* Science Centre Show "Why Science Matters" which will look at the vocational and real world aspects of STEM subjects.

* My World of Work Live, delivered by Skills Development Scotland/Science Centre education staff

This year we are in partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR), based in Geneva, who will be delivering workshops to staff on the development of green/sustainable jobs and skills around the world, and how Scotland fits into this picture. The event will be opened by the leader of the council and will have extensive media coverage.

We are asking if you could be part of the meet the employers marketplace, where young people will have the chance to talk to your organisation about the kinds of jobs/careers that could be available, and what qualifications and skills will help them on that pathway.

There will be a focus on the career opportunities in STEM ((Science Technology Engineering and Maths) areas, in line with of the Wood Report on Developing the Young Workforce (Recommendation 12: A focus on STEM (Science Technology Engineering Maths) should sit at the heart of the development of Scotland's Young Workforce.) The purpose of this event is to make them aware of these opportunities , demystify what they are and to plant the seed for considering career/further pathways. This age group have been selected as they are yet to take their subject options, and early intervention will have a greater impact. Last year over 350 young people attended the fully booked event.

The move to a Low Carbon economy is one of the key areas for growth in Glasgow and Scotland. The Economic Commission has recognised the importance of the sector for Glasgow and recommended that the city should work towards becoming a global low-carbon hub. Through the Sustainable Glasgow partnership, the city is developing a strategy to develop the skills pipeline for our young people in order that they are equipped with the right skills and knowledge to access these career paths.

The day is split into morning session from 9.45 to 11.45 and 12.45 to 2.45. Access to the science centre for set up will be from 8.30 am There will be 250 pupils in the morning and 250 in the afternoon, from S2/S3 (ages 12 - 14). These groups will be divided into 3 so there will be approx. 80 pupils at a time spread out across the employers. The pupils will be self-led to chat to a number of colleges/employers and will not be timetabled to go to specific tables.

The meet the employers will take place in the Atrium and the Clyde Suite on the ground floor of the science centre. We will set up tables here for you. To encourage the young people to engage with you we will produce a questionnaire for the young people that will be entered into a prize draw. Could you supply me with a couple of questions for this? Some ideas for this would be what qualifications/skills are useful for gaining employment in your area of work and interesting aspects of the area of work/study.

The purpose of this event is to introduce the young people to the variety and potential of jobs in STEM, and to open their eyes (and those of their teachers) to the potential for really interesting and rewarding career opportunities.

Many of these events target older pupils, but we are looking for an earlier intervention to encourage our young people to consider STEM when they take their subject choices. I'd encourage you to bring any hands on/interactive equipment that you may have, as this always has a greater impact than a table of leaflets.
