Dear All
As the department was quite successful with recruiting PGT students this
year, we will need 19 projects for them (8 Nanoscience, 4 Optical
Technology, 6 Appl Phys, 1 Adv Phys). From the current choice of
courses, I anticipate 2 projects in chemistry, 1 in theory (CNQO or
SILIS), 1 in ABP, 10-12 in Nanoscience, 3-5 in EQOP and maybe 2-3 at the
IoP.
The project will run full time (60 credits) from beginning of June till
end of Aug:
Project start: 8/6/2016
Report hand-in: 25/8/2016
Projects talks: 1/9/16 (tentative)
Project vivas: 2-3/9/16 (tentative)
Opt Tech/ Appl Phys./ Adv. Phys students need to do a project specific
literature survey starting middle of sem 2. Hence the project should be
assigned in the first week(s) of semester 2. The students should read
the 2 papers in the project description, search for another 1-2 papers,
meet the supervisor about 2-3 times and then give a talk and possibly
poster in week 12 or the revision week. This is part of the assessment
for PH951.
In order to instigate the selection process and to enable a finalization
of the choice of courses in semester 2, a presentation on the research
structure of the dept. is scheduled for Wed next week, 11/11/2016,
11-13. A representative of each group (see below) will present an
overview on the research interest of the group and the individual
academics. I assume that they will ask around in the group for input,
but how they organize that is left to them. If you have already concrete
ideas for a project/projects or project areas, contact them with a
proposition and possibly material, please.
Afterwards, the students are strongly encouraged to contact potential
supervisors in areas of their interest. I will ask for formal project
proposition for the start of sem 2.
Thanks for your help.
Regards
Thorsten
