Subject: REMINDER - RAS Thesis Prize deadline 31 January 2016

Dear Heads of Department,

Can I urge you to nominate candidates for the RAS Michael Penston and Keith
Runcorn thesis prizes, and to ask colleagues to do the same? The deadline
for nominations is 31 January 2016.

The two prizes, each of £1,000, will be awarded for the best doctoral thesis
submitted to a UK university in 2015 in Astronomy or Astrophysics (Michael
Penston) and Geophysics, including Exploration Geophysics, Physics of the
Earth's Atmosphere, Ionosphere or Magnetosphere, Planetary Physics, Solar
Physics or Solid-Earth Geophysics (Keith Runcorn).

In addition to the cash prizes (which include £50 in book tokens for runners
up) the winners will be given the opportunity of making a presentation about
their thesis to an Ordinary Meeting of the Society.

Nominations, by email attachment to me (aw at ras.org.uk )

*	Submitted by a Fellow of the Society (normally the student's
examiner or supervisor).
*	In the form of a citation of not more than 500 words.
*	Accompanied by a copy of the thesis abstract.
*	Accompanied by the names of two referees familiar with the thesis,
who have been requested to send a reference directly to ejd at ras.org.uk by
the submission deadline. At least one of the referees should be affiliated
to an academic or research establishment other than that of the candidate.
Suitable referees would be the candidate's internal and external examiners
for the doctorate.

To be eligible, the thesis must have been:

*	Written on a relevant topic (see list above).
*	Submitted to a University in the United Kingdom.
*	Nominations must by received by Jan 31st in the year following that
in which the thesis was recommended for the award of a doctorate by the
examiners (i.e. while students do not need to have attended a graduation
ceremony, they do need to have successfully defended their thesis in a viva
and submitted final corrections which have been approved by their
University).

Please take this opportunity of assisting a promising student onto their
next career rung, since possession of this prize has been a significant
boost for most previous winners.

Best wishes,

Annette
