Dear Colleagues,

here is my monthly reminder to please deposit your publications as soon as possible on Pure<http://pure.strath.ac.uk/admin/login.xhtml> to satisfy the HEFCE policies for eligibility of research papers to the next REF. See below for details:

________________________________

Open Access (OA) is increasingly becoming a condition of funding bodies, including RCUK and the Wellcome Trust. HEFCE have also introduced an open access policy for eligibility in the Post 2014 REF. The University of Strathclyde is working to help academics and researchers to comply with these requirements.

There are two routes to publishing Open Access:

  * Green OA is when the author publishes in a journal and then deposits a version of this article into a subject or institutional repository, such as Pure<http://pure.strath.ac.uk/admin/login.xhtml> and Strathprints<http://strathprints.strath.ac.uk/>. Depositing scholarly work in Strathprints can be achieved through Pure<http://pure.strath.ac.uk/admin/login.xhtml>, the University's Current Research Information System. Most journals comply with Green OA policies. Sherpa/Romeo<http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/romeo/> provides compliance information of publisher’s self-archiving policies.

  * Gold OA is when the author makes their article openly accessible in a journal, sometimes for a fee or Article Processing Charge (APC). This journal may be exclusively OA, or it may be a hybrid, with a mixture of OA and subscription-only articles. The University Library manages the Research Councils UK (RCUK)<http://www.rcuk.ac.uk/> and the Charity Open Access Fund (COAF)<http://www.wellcome.ac.uk/About-us/Policy/Spotlight-issues/Open-access/Charity-open-access-fund/> OA funds for the payment of Gold OA fees (article processing charges, or APCs). Sherpa/Fact<http://www.sherpa.ac.uk/fact/index.php> is a Funders & Authors Compliance Tool to help researchers check if their chosen journals comply with their funder's requirements for open access to research.

Whichever route is taken the University requires that authors deposit the author's accepted manuscript of the research in Pure<http://pure.strath.ac.uk/admin/login.xhtml>.

This enables your research outputs to be eligible for submission in the next REF.
