Dear All

As the department was again quite successful with recruiting PGT
students this year, we will need up to 25 projects for them. As the
Advanced Physics course is picking up recruitment, there seems to be
some interest now for plasma and theory, which should help to spread the
demand.

The project will run full time (60 credits) from beginning of June till
end of Aug:
Project start: 8/6/2017
Report hand-in: 24/8/2017
Assessment: 30/8-8/9/17

Contrary to earlier years, there is no literature survey in sem 2.

In order to instigate the selection process and to enable a finalization
of the choice of courses in semester 2, a presentation on the research
structure of the dept. is scheduled for 10/1/2017, 10-12. The group
leader or a representative will present an overview on the research
interest of the group and the individual academics. I assume that they
will ask around in the group for input, but how they organize that is
left to them. If you have already concrete ideas for a project/projects
or project areas, contact them with a proposition and possibly material,
please.

Afterwards, the students are strongly encouraged to contact potential
supervisors in areas of their interest. I will ask for a formal project
proposition in the end of January.

Project selection should be towards the end of the semester.
1. If a student and a supervisor negotiated a tailored project, this is
theirs.
2. For the other students, a booklet with the suggested projects is
distributed from which they give three choices. The projects are then
attributed prioritized via semester 1 performance.
3. The students are invited to talk to the potential supervisors for
details, but unless there are objections, I am planning to do the
allocation without a signing round. I will reject choices which are
obviously out of the remit of the student's choice of courses.

Thanks for your help.

Regards

Thorsten
