Dear All,
Following on from the discussions at the Faculty Forum at the end of March and the recent Departmental Committee I would like to form a picture of the thinking across the Department as to how we can contribute to the improvement of the Department's and Faculty's financial positions. I am doing this in anticipation of the Dean asking me next Tuesday what we can do. Therefore I would appreciate if you could let me know any ideas you may have of initiatives, that could have a positive effect.
Best wishes
Erling

Subject: What can YOU do?

To: All members of Faculty of Science

At the Faculty Forum held on 29 March 2017, the Dean challenged every member of the Faculty to directly generate additional income or support those who can do so. (The Dean's presentation is available on the Faculty Forum SharePoint site<https://moss.strath.ac.uk/science/facultyforum/SitePages/Home.aspx?View=%7B54FF7ACA%2DFE60%2D465C%2D8D64%2DEEDEE960E6E8%7D&SelectedID=3>, under March meeting papers)

Since then, the Dean has heard from some Heads of Department on ideas and initiatives in the areas of

* international and RUK student recruitment to UG and PGT courses

* recruitment of more PGRs (Scots-EU, RUK, international)

*         research grants

*         knowledge exchange.

For instance, some colleagues have undertaken to talk to current or former students with the aim of their promoting Strathclyde as a study destination. Others are developing innovative 4-year PhD programmes which will combine development of subject expertise with development of professional skills in higher education. Still others are prioritising submission of research grant applications. For the first time, licensing of education (rather than research) is being investigated. The "circular economy" has been identified as a potential new area for PGT or CPD study (to be delivered by a partnership of Business, Engineering, and Science) and discussions around that will be initiated. An idea for offering CPD in understanding materials to artists, hobbyists and other craft-makers is being explored.

If you have ideas which are beyond the scope of your department, please suggest them to the relevant Vice-Dean or to me. Every idea will be given careful consideration and we hope to be able to work with you on realising many of them to the benefit of the Faculty and University.
