[Academic] PH550 talks

Attendance at my session of yesterday’s PH550 project talks was exceptionally, I would even say disgracefully, low. I would expect to see both the Primary and Secondary Supervisor of each student speaker, together with one or two interested observers from the groups hosting the projects. On a practical level, we need as many markers as possible to avoid any suggestion of bias in the averages.

These talks should be a Big Deal. PH550 students take their final year talks very seriously and spend many hours preparing them (much, I’m sure, as you would do for a conference). They are entitled to a show of support from the Department.

It is very hard to generate a sense of occasion with fewer than a dozen people, including speakers, in a room. For information, the attached document lists speakers and sometimes absent supervisors at the session I chaired.

I would be grateful for any suggestions that would enable us to raise the profile and attendance of the PH550 talks in future years.
