[Academic] UCU Action

Dear All,

At the Student Staff Committee meeting that was held on Wednesday 21st March several of the student reps raised a comment about fairness of process. To minimise the stress caused by the UCU action to the students, staff teaching classes that were affected by the UCU action were asked to indicate to the students what material would not be covered in the examination. This has been be appreciated by the students. The aim of this action was to allay students' worries that entire syllabus would be covered in the examinations even if all the content had not been taught. Students on those classes that were not affected by the UCU action have the feeling that this is giving those students on classes affected by UCU action an unfair advantage, in that the students know what to target in their revision. To address this, could I ask staff who taught classes not affected by the UCU action to give a list of content that will not be examined to the students by end of Week 10. This can simply be something along the lines of the “The time dependent perturbation theory material covered in week 10 will not be assessed”.

From Session 2018/19 all Level 4 and Level 5 examinations will now be “No choice Examinations”. This will allow staff to say at the start of the class the published curriculum is indicative of the material covered in the course and any material that is delivered in the course will be examinable.

ps Please do not bombard me with emails about this. We have to treat all students fairly and the above is the only way I can see of doing this.
