Due to popular demand, I am extending the deadline for updating project details to Thursday 26th July 2018. I hope to be able make available a draft list of projects to the 4th year students at the beginning of August so that they may begin their selection process for project options.
Even if you are not able to send me complete project descriptions by Thursday, please inform me of your intention to update your set of projects so that they can be included in later revisions of the project booklet.
Daniel.

Subject: PH450: Call for Projects
Dear All,
I am beginning to prepare the project booklet for next year's 4th Year Projects. In the first instance I shall assume that last year's projects will run again [1]. Please notify me of any changes or additions by Friday 20th July 2018. I attach a template Project Description Form for new and revised projects.
Note:
- Each Academic and Senior Researcher should provide at least 3 project places (you may choose to allow multiple students one the same project). This does not mean you will necessarily be allocated the full amount as I shall load-balance the projects assigned across supervisors and divisions.
- New staff 1st supervisors should have a more experienced staff member as 2nd supervisor. The 1st supervisor should normally be an academic, senior research fellow, Chancellor Fellow or similar (i.e. if you are allowed to supervise PhD students, you are able to be a 1st supervisor on an undergraduate project). The 2nd supervisor should be any of the previous or any post-doc.
- Students may discuss possible projects with potential supervisors over the Summer break. Subject to agreement between student, supervisor, and myself, a project can be allocated prior to the official project allocation week (see below), removing them from the allocation pool.
Please note the following dates (indicative at this stage, TBC):
- Project Allocation Period: Welcome Week 10th - 14th September 2018, students to discuss projects and obtain signatures
- Nominal Project Start: Monday 17th September 2018
- Project Talks: Mid-February 2019, over two consecutive Wednesdays from 1300 to 1730
- Project Report Due: End-March 2019
- Project Vivas: During Second Semester Exam Period
NB: It is important that supervisors (1st and 2nd) be present at the project talks, and that the viva committee (primary supervisor, independent marker, chair) be available during the Viva period.
Please contact me if you have any queries.
Thanks,
Daniel.
