Subject: Strathclyde Doctoral School Launch - interdisciplinary poster competition
Importance: High

Dear FRC members,

The faculty have been requested by Prof Billy Kerr to nominate 10 PGR students for a poster session/competition associated with the launch of the Strathclyde Doctoral School. We therefore need to identify PGR students who have recently presented a poster that has been short-listed or won a prize at an international conference. As you will see from the email below. We need to provide nominations by the 7th Sept. I would therefore like to ask you, through your knowledge of the PGR students in your departments, to provide the names of up to 3 students from your department who have been honoured for a poster presentation within the last year.

Each nomination should include

Student Name, Supervisor Name, Title of Poster, Name and date of poster and award achieved. This event will showcase our students and our work and so your input will be greatly appreciated.

Once we have all the nominations we will select the 10 than represent the best recent work from across the Faculty.

I would be grateful if you could supply the names to Elaine Hurley by 31st August.

Best wishes

Rob

Dear Vice Deans Research/Academic,

As you know, the Strathclyde Doctoral School will officially launch at the start of the 2018/19 academic year. To note this, a launch event has been arranged to introduce the Doctoral School to new and existing PGRs, their supervisors, and all staff who support PGRs. The event is scheduled for the afternoon of Friday 5th October in the TIC, aligning with the annual PGR Induction Session, and with the Principal delivering the Strathclyde Doctoral School opening address.

As part of the event, there will be poster presentation component, where current PGRs can showcase their research to the new intake and other existing PGRs. Based on this, we are seeking a small number of high quality posters from current PhD students, who have, perhaps, already presented their work in poster format and may even have been award-winning at external research conferences. Hence, we are encouraging the re-use of posters that have already been prepared by the student.

We would be grateful if Faculties could nominate the presenters they wish to be included in this showcase. To achieve a balanced spread of research disciplines and based on the current level of PGR distribution across Strathclyde, we ask that you please arrange to nominate the following number of presenters from your Faculty:

Engineering: 10 posters

HASS: 5 posters

SBS: 5 posters

Science: 10 posters

I’d be grateful if you could forward details of your nominated presenters to Stephanie.colvan at strath.ac.uk<mailto:Stephanie.colvan at strath.ac.uk> by Friday 7th September.

There will be a prize for ‘Best Poster Presentation’ awarded to the student who is deemed to have most effectively conveyed how their research has global impact and value, along with one runner-up prize.

I hope that you will also be able to join us for this opening and that you will support our efforts to deliver the Strathclyde Doctoral School’s first University-wide event. Final details of the Doctoral School launch will be forwarded on in due course.

Kind regards,

Billy
