Subject: PhD Supervisors' List

Dear Heads of Physics,

I would be very grateful if you could circulate the message below to any of your colleagues who supervise PhD students. We are facilitating a new network and would like to encourage all PhD supervisors in physics and related subjects to join.

There are numerous ways in which undergraduate Physics teaching practice is shared within UK, both through external examiners, pedagogic research and HE networks, but the supervision of post-graduate research students is typically seen as an individual process, one which is often very isolating for supervisors. This isolation is often exacerbated because within an individual institution, different departments face
very different post-graduate problems and process. In addition, very little pedagogic research exists to reveal good practice.
However, the way PhD students are being taught is changing more quickly now than ever, with the development of doctoral training partnerships and examples of good practice highlighting these changes. Universities are adapting their regulations to address these concerns, but changes in university regulations are broadly focused, addressing the needs of a wide range of academic fields.

This network aims to address the growing need for a place to discuss these recent changes, by providing supervisors with a forum to discuss their own approach to physics student supervision. It aims to allow supervisors a place to share their experiences in mentorship, to address the changing requirements from government and funding agencies, to provide a breadth of experience in the different approaches set out in universities across the country and to address recent concerns about improving post-graduate students’ well-being. Although all PhD students have a unique research experience, the problems faced by both the students and their supervisors are often similar across the field of physics, and so the IOP provides an excellent home for such a network. Please circulate this to anyone you feel could benefit from this support

With many thanks and good regards,

Daniel
