Subject: EH40 update: Workplace Exposure Limits
Dear Colleagues,
Whilst I understand that this e-mail communication may not be relevant to all of you, for those who it is I would like to draw your attention to the latest version of EH40 which has recently been updated to include new and revised workplace exposure limits. A summary of the changes can be found on pages 5-7 of EH40<http://www.hse.gov.uk/pUbns/priced/eh40.pdf>.
The HSE document EH40 details substances that are subject to workplace exposure limits (WELs). WELs are concentrations of hazardous substances in the air, averaged over a specified time period. Limits are set in order to help to protect the health of workers, these substances are subject to the requirements of CoSHH whereby employers must prevent or control exposure to substances hazardous to health. Under CoSHH ‘control’ is defined as adequate only if:
a) The principles of good control practice are applied,
b) Any WEL is not exceeded, and
c) Exposure to asthmagens, carcinogens and mutagens are reduced to as low as is reasonably practicable.
Please note that the absence of a substance from the list of WELs does not indicate that it is safe, exposure to all relevant substances should be controlled appropriately.
If you, or anyone within your department, use any of the substances affected by the recent changes, please review your COSHH assessments accordingly and contact safety at strath.ac.uk<mailto:safety at strath.ac.uk> in the first instance if you require any additional information or assistance in relation to possible occupational hygiene monitoring or health surveillance requirements.
Kind regards,
Sarah.
