Dear colleagues,
As discussed at the last Departmental Committee meeting, with a view to improving further, and in the light of low success rates in some areas, Faculty have asked us to enhance pre-reviewing of funding proposals. In addition, we have been asked that we keep adequate records of pre-reviewing activity, allowing Faculty to (i) ensure that pre-review is happening when appropriate (ii) promote its effectiveness by being more aware of the results of pre-review and (iii) to keep track of who is spending time doing pre-review. The particular focus at this time is on submissions to UKRI and ensuring effective pre-review in these cases. Submissions to other funders to be included where possible and as appropriate. In response to this, we proposed to Faculty the following for Physics:
a. The pre-review pool for Physics will be all Professors and Readers.
b. Proposals should be submitted for pre-review three weeks in advance of the submission deadline.
c. We will maintain a spreadsheet/database within the Department to capture (i) who pre-reviewed the proposal, (ii) date of review (returned to the applicant), and (iii) recommendations. One of three outcomes is possible (A) No changes required; (B) Minor revision required, with no additional review; (C) Significant revision required, with additional review.
d. All proposals (invited and responsive mode) with Physics-based PIs valued >£50k will be pre-reviewed, excepting consortium proposals for which appropriate review by external partners is in place (in which case the details of the names of the external partners performing the review should be provided).
In practice, this means that the attached proforma should be completed and emailed to Kirsten and Gail at the same time as the CPM (the new Costing and Pricing Module within FMS, that replaces pFACT) pre-review (i.e. before costing submission).
This applies for funding proposals to be submitted from 17th June, with pre-review commencing on 27th May.
Thanks,
G.
