Subject: FW: Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships 2020 - Internal Selection and Review Process

Dear All,

Our fellowships officer, Louise Virdee (cc'd) has sent out notification of the internal selection process for the Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships 2020 internal selection process to all VDR's, this should be making its way to you (apologises for cross posting). I wanted to make sure you had a heads up at departmental level in case you have any possible candidates to put forward, perhaps anyone that didn't quite get selected from the chancellors fellow/GTAP route, those could be possibilities via this route. Mobility is encouraged, so a good scheme to attract strong ECRs to Strathclyde (although match-funding is required).

Do note there is a faculty selection process (below) therefore I'd make sure any possible candidates you have you identify to your VDR and head of department. Any questions do direct to Louise (louise.virdee at strath.ac.uk<mailto:louise.virdee at strath.ac.uk>) , my role in this usually comes at the later stage to help the selected candidates develop their proposals.

Best wishes,
Alison

Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships 2020 - Internal Selection and Review Process
Funder Deadline: 27 February 2020
https://www.leverhulme.ac.uk/early-career-fellowships

Scheme Overview
The Leverhulme Trust Early Career Fellowships 2020 round will open for applications in January: https://www.leverhulme.ac.uk/early-career-fellowships.

The intention of the scheme is to support the career development of those at a relatively early stage of their academic careers. The objective is for Fellows to undertake a significant piece of publishable research during the tenure of the award, and the project put forward should therefore not be a reworking or mere extension of the candidate's doctoral research project.

The awards are tenable for 36 months and must start between 1 September 2020 and 1 May 2021. Requests to hold the award part-time over a proportionately longer period for health related reasons, disability or childcare commitments will be supported (it is not possible to hold the fellowship part-time and hold another post at the same time).

The Leverhulme Trust will contribute 50% of salary up to £25,000 per annum over 3 years, plus research expenses of up to £6,000 per annum (conference attendance; travel and subsistence; research assistance; laboratory consumables etc).

Please note that the remainder of the salary must be paid by the Department, School, or Faculty (see 'Host Institution Commitments'<https://www.leverhulme.ac.uk/early-career-fellowships> section). The matching funding contributed by the host institution must be drawn from generally available funds and cannot be associated with any other grants received by the institution.

Eligibility
Applications will be considered in all subject areas with the following exceptions: (i) studies of disease, illness and disabilities in humans and animals and (ii) research that is intended to inform clinical practice or the development of medical applications.

There are several conditions of eligibility:

  *   All candidates must hold a doctorate by the time they take up the Fellowship (and must have submitted their thesis for examination by the application closing date);
  * Applicants must have submitted their PhD thesis for viva voce examination not more than 4 years prior to the application closing date (that is, those who submitted before 27 February 2016 are not eligible unless they have since had an eligible career break)
  * Applicants must not yet have held a full-time permanent academic post in a UK university or comparative UK institution.
  * Applicants must either hold a degree from a UK higher education institution at the time of taking up the Fellowship OR at the time of the application deadline must hold an academic position in the UK (e.g. fixed-term lectureship, fellowship) which commenced no less than 4 months prior to the closing date.
  * Applicants who have not already moved institutions in the course of their academic career should nominate a new host institution OR otherwise demonstrate clear evidence of the academic and/or personal reasons for remaining at the same institution

Internal Selection and Review Process
Given the match-funding requirements and to ensure the University supports the highest quality proposals, a 2-stage internal selection and review process will be in operation:

(i) Faculty Review and Selection - Faculties are asked to review and select up to 2 candidates. Please note that should you be in the position of having more than 2 candidates that you consider to be very strong, the number of applicants submitted may be increased by request.

(ii) Institutional Review - Faculties are asked to forward a completed pdf version of the Leverhulme application form plus a Head of Department Statement in a separate Word document to louise.virdee at strath.ac.uk<mailto:madeleine.rooney at strath.ac.uk> by 6th February 2020.

The Head of Department Statement should include responses to the following questions (limited to 100 words each):

  * Why is your department the best place for the applicant to undertake their research project?
  * Why would you like the applicant to be hosted by your department and what are the benefits to your institution by acting as their host?
  * How will the applicant be mentored by colleagues in your department?
  * How might the applicant contribute to teaching and the wider intellectual life of the host department?
  * What facilities and relevant resources will the applicant be provided with by the host department?

Application Approval
Applicants should note the following internal approval stages:

  * As for all external research funding applications, application costings need to be submitted for HoD then RKES approval on the Costing and Pricing Module (CPM) on the Financial Management System (FMS). Note: applicants need to agree their starting salary with the relevant HoD in line with the university's salary policy
  * Once the application is submitted by the applicant on the Leverhulme submission portal, this is then automatically routed to the Head of Department then the institutional approver to make the final submission to Leverhulme. Applicants should submit at least 5 working days before the funder deadline to allow the necessary checks and approvals to be undertaken
