Subject: EPSRC New Horizons - call for peer reviewers

Hi Everyone,

I hope all is well with each of you and you had a lovely Easter weekend break!

As you know EPSRC have launched the New Horizons call and they are now looking for reviewers to nominate themselves – they expect demand to be high and it will also be a different review process than usual since the grant applications themselves are being anonymised.

EPSRC are looking for referees to 'batch review' around ten 4-page proposals using a bespoke streamlined reviewer form. Proposals will be from across two broad areas:

i) Novel physical sciences research aimed at new approaches for understanding fundamental Physics, Chemistry and Materials Science, the creation of new experimental approaches and the discovery of new molecules and materials.

ii) Novel advances in Mathematical Sciences research across the breadth of pure and applied mathematics as well as in statistics and operational research.

EPSRC indicate potential reviewers would need to be free between 20th June and 20th August 2020 to review these 10 applications – it does not matter if a potential reviewer is themselves planning an application, EPSRC would ensure they do not review those in the same areas as that reviewers own application.

If any staff members are in a position to sign up I believe it would be of value both to Strathclyde and the research community more widely – this a novel peer review process and it could be particularly beneficial in EDI terms to be assessing applications stripped of names and institutional affiliation. I’m sure feedback solicited from eventual reviewers would benefit how applications could be assessed in the future.

I’m hoping you could send this around your departments as pretty much all researchers in each of PAC, physics (incl IoP), maths and statistics cover the areas of this scheme and could put themselves forward as reviewers? Nomination is via completion of a SmartSurvey: https://www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/NewHorizonsAssessors/<https://eur02.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.smartsurvey.co.uk%2Fs%2FNewHorizonsAssessors%2F&data=02%7C01%7Ccath.cheshire%40strath.ac.uk%7C4e4a84b7858a46b2d29c08d7e15034cc%7C631e0763153347eba5cd0457bee5944e%7C0%7C0%7C637225606901261209&sdata=kUSxogXrvRFJn76pbzxqjHSMnFPvy6aEKTnyQldFc8E%3D&reserved=0> Its only one page and quite short, deadline for completion is 25th May 2020. Anyone who does sign up and is accepted, it would be ideal to have a heads up here in RKES so that we can learn from their experience?

It goes without saying if each of you are free and able to put yourselves forward that would also be ideal. I appreciate it’s a difficult time, we are not long off the back of strikes and now into lockdown so anything extra is difficult to commit too.

Best wishes,
Alison
