Dear All,
I’m unable to join at 4pm although may join late to see if the meeting is still going.
Personally I don’t want to move to any face-to-face for my course (PH453/962) and don’t feel it is needed. Having put significant work into an online version, as no doubt all of you have, I believe its working well and covering all aspects. Overall, I think teaching and learning have been enhanced compared to previous years. Examples are weekly lists of what’s expected of students and in what order, including reading and support materials found on the web. Also introduction of new types of questions based on analysing and interpreting information in papers, rather than knowledge-based and/or numerical questions. A struggle is how to receive questions from students during a live lecture that is being recorded. Not being able to see them makes it very hard to know if they’re following.
It would be interesting to know if there is any push from students to have face-to-face, and if so what aspects of teaching they feel they are missing. If things were identified I’d rather try to fill the gaps online than introduce some face-to-face.
Regards,
Rob

Subject: [Academic] Fwd: Brief update regarding face-to-face teaching
Dear All,
This is a reminder about our meeting at 4pm today to discuss our approach to delivering teaching for the rest of semester 1.
Based on discussions at the recent DC meeting and with our students, we would like to move the Department's teaching delivery to online-only (no face-to-face) for the remainder of the semester (subject to IOP review regarding accreditation of our degrees). At our meeting this afternoon, I would like to get your input to this and related issues, such as your experience of what is working well in terms of online delivery and what could be improved, as well as plans for semester 1 assessment. Thanks.

Dear All,
This email contains a brief update regarding face-to-face teaching.
As you know, the University Executive Team adjusted its plans for the transition to blended learning, by rephasing the commencement of the transition phase for two weeks. This means that across the University there is no face-to-face teaching in weeks 4 and 5 of semester 1, and face-to-face teaching will start next week (week 6).
We are in discussions with the Faculty regarding teaching delivery in Physics for the reminder of the semester, given that the learning outcomes for our courses can be achieved via online methods. The Dean will discuss our case with the Executive Team and I expect a decision on this in the next day or two.
I have scheduled a Zoom meeting (details below) for 4pm-5pm on Wednesday (21st Oct) afternoon, to discuss our approach to delivering teaching for the rest of semester 1, including a discussion of the University’s process of approvals, assurances, and risk assessment. Please join this discussion, particularly if you are teaching this semester. Thanks.
