[Academic] PH450: First Report

To PH450 Supervisors,

The First Report is due 11/1/2021 and students have kept updated with revised instructions and the marking sheet that will be used (see attached). The First Report is worth 20% of the final PH450 mark.

  *   The First Report is a check that the students have a firm grasp of the background and fundamental methods or techniques used in the remainder of the project.
  *   They should not only report on the literature but also demonstrate that they can apply background knowledge to existing work, data, theory, models, etc. Original work should be kept for the Second Report.
  *   The First Report should be at a level that is understandable by fellow undergraduates, students should be able to explain the key concepts to an audience with a general physics background. The markers (examination committee) may be comprised of staff not directly in the subject area.
  *   Material from the First Report can be used in the Second Report (in suitably condensed form), i.e. Introduction, Background, Methods etc. TurnItIn will be configured appropriately. However, all material still needs to be properly referenced in the First Report and standard University Policy applies.
  *   Students should be receiving feedback continuously throughout the project, including on written materials that they should be generating as they go along and appraising supervisors of their progress.
  *   For the First Report, students may need a bit of guidance but Supervisors are not expected to be involved in iterative rounds of revision or rewriting.
  *   General advice on the style, format, and content is good but submitted work should be primarily the work of the student.

Students will likely want to concentrate upon coursework assessments towards the end of the semester, it is advisable that they begin compiling material for the First Report if not already drafting it.
