Subject: [compstaff] Interest in SolidWorks research licenses
We have a Campus EDU license for SolidWorks which was bought by DMEM and MAE and is available to students on the Windows Virtual Desktops. The license very clearly states that it is for teaching only and may NOT be used for research or commercial work. We regularly get requests from researchers who want to use it for their projects and we have to advise that they cannot use the EDU license and would need to purchase a research license.
Research licenses are expensive (around £3 - 4k) so for many people who want it just for one-off or occasional use it is too much however I suspect we might have enough interest around the University to purchase a few floating licenses and share out the cost. If you think you might have anyone in your department who would be keen to have access to SolidWorks for research can you put me in touch with whoever would have the responsibility (and budget!) for software purchases so that we can discuss the possibility of contributing to the cost of some floating SolidWorks Research licenses? This might be yourselves, a Research Director or a department administrator.
Thanks
Alasdair
