Dear All,

I am looking for propositions for the MSc projects this year, please.
This year interest seems to be quite distributed covering all groups of
the department but there is still a dominant need for experimental
projects in the solid-state/nanoscience/optics/laser areas.

Guidance to the students is that current planning is based on delivery
of on-campus experience, including experimental ones, if the situation
allows in summer. So please propose a corresponding project but consider
a bit how it could be adapted to a (old) data
analysis/computational/literature-based project if things do not go the
way we want them to go. One option to ease the pressure on space in
research labs is also to use the space and the equipment of the 3rd year
labs to supply practical experience within the relatively wide area
available on level 4. So if you are willing to supervise one of the 3rd
year experiments starting from the scripts and going to more open ended
investigations from that, please indicate that to Melanie with a list of
the experiments you would feel confident to supervise. This can be
either instead of a project description or as a second option in
addition to a proposed one (I will equalize the load):

- Second harmonic generation

- laser diodes

- birefringence of fibres

- Michelson interferometer

As special requests, I invite suggestions to, we have,

- project on solar energy, energy conversion, sustainable energy (Mugove
Maruzane)

- quantum technology and space (Ayush Goyal)

Please supply the project descriptions on the attached template to
Melanie, melanie.mcinanny at strath.ac.uk
<mailto:melanie.mcinanny at strath.ac.uk>, till 13/01/2021

Tentative timeline is

  * 26/2/2021 students indicate project choices
  * 12/3/2021 project allocated
  * 9/6/2021 (TBC): project start in June after decision of  first exam
    board
  * end of July/early August: Project progress workshop (only students
    and project coordinator)
  * 25/8/2021, 12.00 noon: Hand-in deadline for report
  * 30/8-8/9/2021 (or slightly before/after depending on availability of
examiners and delays in project): Assessment by talk and vivas

Thank you very much for providing project opportunities.

Regards

Thorsten
