Some people have been having problems accessing the folders in my previous email. I have also put them on idrive at:
idrive/Science/Physics/project/2020-21
which I hope people will be able to access.

Subject: PH450: 1st Report and Presentation

To PH450 Supervisors,

The list of 1st Report Exam Committees (Supervisor, Independent, Chair) and Marking Allocation for each project is being compiled and I hope to release it within the next few days. There have been a large number of extensions and we are still waiting on a few to come in.

In the meantime, I have placed all of the reports received so far on idrive in the folder idrive/Science/Physics/PH450/2020-21/1st Report
along with the marking sheets, the marking guidelines, and the instructions to students for reference. You can access idrive via Strathcloud https://www.strath.ac.uk/professionalservices/is/help/indepth/strathcloud/networkshares/

Further detailed instructions on the procedures will be issued with the Marking Allocation but Supervisors can begin to mark their own students' projects and reassure them that they will get formative feedback on them soon.

At a minimum, please feedback to your student a general indication of their performance (e.g. Solid 2:1 report, Borderline 1st, etc.) and suggestions as how to improve in the future (taking into account that the 2nd Report will be more in the style of a long journal article). Once the examination committees have completed their individual assessments, the marks may undergo moderation. I am seeking clarification on whether we will be changing previous years' policy on not releasing individual component marks.

The Presentation is due 22nd February 2020. Things to note:

  * Instructions to students include: "The contents of the talk should be primarily based on that of the First Report with any additional progress since. New results are not mandatory, though in their absence you should be able to present the "critical analysis" elements of the First Report in its stead."
  * The aim is for students to be able to effectively and concisely explain their project goals, motivation, background, and methods to their fellow students, not necessarily present any new results.
  * The Presentation is worth 10% of the final PH450 mark so students should keep this in perspective when considering the proportion of time devoted to it as part of the Semester 2 project work (there are 70% of the marks remaining for the 2nd report, viva, and supervisor mark).
  * Presentations are to be pre-recorded Powerpoint slides with voiceover. A camera window of the speaker is optional. Videos are to be uploaded to MyPlace
  * Students should use the provided Powerpoint template (based on the official Science Faculty template). There is an example talk contents that students may want to use to structure their presentation.

FYI Detailed 2nd Report information will be released soon including a report template (similar to Physical Review A), instructions, and marking sheet.

Regards,
Daniel, PH450 Coordinator
